The cabin crew were as always friendly and helpful. Couldn't ask for more. Although the flight in business was under occupied there were a couple of things not available!

  • How long is the flight to Cairo?

Flights to Cairo, Egypt, range in time from almost 8h if you’re flying direct non-stop, to almost 24h if you’re flying via another airport. If you’re flying from Johannesburg (JNB) to Cairo (CAI), the shortest flight time is 7h 45min if you’re flying non-stop with EgyptAir, which rises to 10h if you’re flying Kenya Airways via Nairobi (NBO), 10h 15min if you’re flying Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD), 13h 45min if you’re flying Turkish Airlines via Istanbul (IST), 13h 45min if you’re flying Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH)or 15h 35min if you’re flying Emirates via Dubai (DXB). When looking for Cairo flight deals, keep in mind that if you fly via Dubai, Doha and Istanbul, you are flying north past Cairo to reach those cities, and then you have to fly south back to Cairo, which is why the flight times are much longer. Also, remember that your flight time from Cape Town (CPT) to Johannesburg is 2h and your flight time from Durban (DUR) to Johannesburg is 1h, so add at least 3h to your trip if you’re flying from Durban and 5h if you’re flying from Cape Town for connecting flights.

  • Are there non-stop flights to Cairo?

The only South African airport that offers non-stop flights to Cairo International Airport, Cairo, Egypt, is OR Tambo International in Johannesburg, with EgyptAir. There are no non-stop flights from Johannesburg’s other airport, Lanseria (HLA), or from Cape Town International or King Shaka International in Durban. If you opt to fly with Emirates, Qatar Airways or Turkish Airlines, you can fly directly (but with stops) from Cape Town or Durban to Cairo International. For smaller South African cities, a cheap and easy option is to fly to Johannesburg and then on to Cairo.

  • How do you get from Cairo International Airport to the city centre?

Several buses depart the airport from the bus depot outside terminal 1 at Cairo International, including lines 111 and 381, which stop at Midan Ramses in the city centre. The cost is around R10. Taxis are also available, with the cheaper ones costing about R50 and the more expensive ones around R100 (the price depends on the type of car). Some taxis are metered, but that doesn’t mean they will turn the meter on. Be sure to use your best negotiating skills to get the price down, and be sure that the taxi driver understands how much you’ll be paying, so that there are no surprises when you alight.

Other incredible sights to see on the Giza Plateau include the Sphinx and several ancient tombs. This historical area remains a hotbed for Egyptology enthusiasts and tourists alike. The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (known simply as the Egyptian Museum) contains artefacts and collections on display, which document the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt. The new Grand Egyptian Museum, also known as the Giza Museum, is set to eclipse the Egyptian Museum.
