This airline is horrible. They allowed my wife who has a Mexican passport to board a flight from Mauritius to Johannesburg, South Africa without notifying or checking if she needed a visa. This resulted in her being in holding for over 24 hours without food or water and cost over $2000 in expenses to leave the country after they threatened to put her in a holding cell for 3 days and fly her back to Mauritius completely ruining our travel plans. The airline didn’t even reimburse us for our flights and was charged $1200 by immigration in South Africa. We missed a Safari we were looking forward to for months and they handled it so poorly. While detaining my wife several of the security guards asked for her help to speak Spanish to other customers in similar situations because even though it’s an international airport her and I were the only ones who were able to translate. They treat people like literal slaves. Keeping us locked in an area & forcing us to work. Be highly cautious and don’t fly with this trash airline.

Most of the flights to Durban from Lanseria International Airport are operated by FlySafair and Kulula which both fly direct from Johannesburg where Lanseria is located. These are budget airlines so economies of scale are important by providing an eco-friendly knock-on effect in that they fly as few times a day as possible and carry as many passengers at a time as they can. This reduces the total number of flights which is now a critical part of environmental sustainability in the industry. Kulula also uses a continuous descent landing approach rather than a staggered one through different flight levels which reduces fuel consumption as the engines are constantly throttled back, rather than moderated to level out intermittently on the way down.
Plastic is one of the biggest scourges on the planet so the first thing you can do is avoid accepting any single-use or "disposable" plastic items, particularly small bottles of water. Also, yo shouldn't purchase snacks on board for the same reason. It’s a short flight where you’ll start descending almost as soon as you reach cruising height so rather grab a bite at the airport before you leave for more sustainable travel. Lanseria is quite a way from central Jhb so try to take a shuttle or a rideshare to get to the airport to save on vehicle emissions. A wonderful way of offsetting your carbon footprint after a flight that’s specific to South Africa is to plant a spekboom bush every time you fly – it’s the most carbon efficient plant on the planet and heavily promoted in the country for these properties.
