Why visit Hana?

Occupying the eastern edge of the island of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands, Hana is a beautiful, yet isolated destination. It is an area that was first settled by Polynesian people between 500AD and 800AD and is now a popular destination for surfers. Renowned for its rugged coastline, peaceful setting and unspoilt natural beauty, Hana can only be reached via a narrow road that famously winds along the coastline in a series of hairpin turns, bridges and breathtaking ocean views. Framed with tropical rainforest and crystal blue waters, Hana is a popular place to swim, sunbathe or snorkel. Its many beaches, particularly Hamoa Beach, are considered to be some of the most beautiful in the Pacific and are popular celebrity haunts. On the Hana Highway, you can spend time at Kahanu Gardens, a botanical garden that features a fantastic collection of plants and the world's largest collection of breadfruit. The garden is also the location of Pi'ilanihale Heiau, an ancient temple dating from the 14th Century, which is believed to be the largest of its kind in the Hawaiian Islands. If you venture out of Hana, you can explore Haleakala National Park, the site of the dormant volcano Haleakalā. Its tallest peak is said to be the home of the demigod Maui in local legend. The park stretches all the way to the coast and offers fantastic opportunities to watch the sunrise or hike along the numerous trails across the desert environment.
