Cherbourg is undergoing major public works relating to streets and sidewalks. This is not the fault of Avis of course but it made it difficult to access the train station and car, especially on the return. When I took the vehicle the agent was pretty aggressive about trying to get me to upgrade to an automatic or larger car. I'm why do I stood my ground and stuck with the Fiat 500 hybrid Dolce Vita. A cute little car. Perfect for me, the solo traveler. Keep this in mind: in France gas stations seem to be few and far between, similar to the way things are in Ireland. You have to return the car full of gas. It almost cost me my train to Lyon, because the first gas station Maps took me to was closed. Overall a good experience. The car had 10k km on it. Easy to drive on the narrow rural roads of Brittany & Normandy.
