Flights to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), typically take 13h 15min – 23h 55min due to the need for a stopover. Current flight deals to Kinshasa will either route you through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi (NBO), Kenya, on Kenya Airways, or through Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa (ADD), Ethiopia, on Ethiopian Airlines. Both of these airlines also offer direct flights to NBO and ADD from Cape Town International Airport (CPT), with Kenya Airways making a stop at Livingstone/Victoria Falls on the way to Nairobi. From King Shaka International Airport in Durban (DUR), a convenient option is to fly to Johannesburg and then transfer to an international flight. Remember to add 3h to your journey time from DUR and 5h from CPT.
For Kinshasa flight deals, flying non-stop to N’djili International Airport, Kinshasa (FIH) from any South African city is not unfortunately currently possible. A good option for Kinshasa flight deals is to fly on Kenya Airways via Airport in Nairobi (NBO) or Ethiopian Airlines via International Airport in Addis Ababa (ADD).
The only way to get to the city centre from the airport is by taxi, which will cost between R170 and R210. The journey time will depend on traffic, but the distance between the airport and the downtown area is usually covered in under an hour.
Kinshasa, DRC, is the capital and largest city of the country, the third-largest city in Africa after Cairo and Lagos, and the largest Francophone (French-speaking) city in the world – even bigger than Paris! This means it is always teeming with people and with life. Take a half-day tour of the Bonobo Sanctuary (Lola ya Bonobo), which is a shelter for orphaned, endangered apes. The Congo River is Africa’s behemoth, and is also worth visiting. On the other side of the river, a whopping 1 kilometre away (which shows you how wide the river is), is the capital of the Republic of the Congo, Brazzaville. These two capital cities are the second-closest pairing of capital cities in the world (after Rome and Vatican City). South Africans will need a visa to get there, accessible by ferry. The National Museum of Congo depicts the cultural history of the many ethnic groups and tribes of the DRC. The Marché Central is one of the largest markets in Africa and it is best visited with a local tour guide. Africa Parkaventure offers a tropical jungle experience with ziplining and other river activities on the outskirts of the city. The poulet arachide (chicken in peanut sauce) served at the local restaurant at the park, comes highly rated. The Cathédrale Notre Dame du Congo is Kinshasa’s answer to the original Notre Dame in Paris (cementing the unique Francophone relationship between the two capitals), while the Palais de Marbre (Marble Palace), which is a former presidential home, is a stunning example of imitation French architecture (even though the DRC was a Belgian, not a French, colony).
South Africans wishing to travel to Kinshasa, DRC, will need both a passport and a visa.
Kinshasa N'djili (FIH), located 17,7 km from the city centre, is the airport you fly into when you book flights to Kinshasa.
