The airport offers a few ways to get to the city centre, including taxis outside of the arrivals terminal that will take you to the city in around 20min depending on traffic. There are local buses that run from the commercial part of the airport to the city and take around 30-40min depending on traffic and stops. There is an airport shuttle bus that can be prearranged and will take you to your hotel in roughly 30min. Local taxi apps are also available to take you around the city.

If you’re looking for a hike with a view, head out to Zomba Massif and scale the mountain of Shire Highlands. You can take a tour of the Shire River and catch a glimpse of hippos, crocodiles, and elephants. If you’re looking for more of an escape, you can make your way to Mumbo Island, an expansive offshore resort with forests and beaches. Chintheche is considered one of Malawi’s best beaches and sits on the northern shore of Lake Malawi with tropical surroundings.
As a South African citizen, you don’t need a visa to visit Malawi for tourist purposes. Your stay cannot exceed 30 days and your passport must be valid for the length of your stay. If you wish to do business, you will need to apply through your local consulate.
